Dress Code

At East Carling Public School, our Dress Code allows for the expression of individuality and personal choice while sustaining a respectful learning and teaching environment for the school community.

  1. Staff and students are expected to wear clothing (and jewellery) appropriate for regular school activities where appropriate is defined as:
free of inappropriate language and/or graphics (weapons; profanity; vulgarity; remarks/images which are discriminatory, derogatory, or offensively suggestive; advertising for products which are illegal for minors to purchase).
  2. Footwear must be appropriate for safe participation in all types of school activities and be conducive to a positive learning environment (i.e. no slippers).  Students are expected to have indoor and outdoor footwear.
  3. Running shoes with non-marking soles as well as suitable gym clothing are required for physical education activities.
  4. Sunglasses are not to be worn inside the school unless medically required.
  5. Headwear is not to be worn in classrooms, lunchrooms, or while travelling to/from classes except on special occasions as determined by the school administration.  (Exceptions may be granted by the school administration for medical conditions or religious reasons consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.)
  6. Students are encouraged to wear hats outdoors for warmth during cold weather and protection from the sun during warm weather.  The wearing of headbands or kerchiefs which cover most of the head is not permitted, however, in order to prevent the creation of identifiable groups and thus the exclusion of some students.

Finally, all students (JK-8) are expected to comply with the School Dress Code, as defined, on school grounds or while participating in school functions.  Infractions of this Dress Code will result in students being asked to cover/remove inappropriate attire and parents being notified in order to seek support for the policy.

Your School Council parent representatives, along with staff representatives, have endorsed the Dress Code.
